Colin Firth: I no longer support the Liberal Democrats
Actor who was one of the Lib Dems’ most high profile backers before the election cites party’s position on tuition fees as one of the reasons for his disillusionment
Colin Firth, the actor and one of the celebrity backers of the Liberal Democrats at the election, yesterday admitted he no longer supported Nick Clegg’s party saying he was now without affiliation.
Speaking at a film festival in Dubai he said: “My compass has not stopped spinning,” referring to the many policy switches made by the party he previously supported.
He said: “I think it is profoundly disillusioning if you are a student who registered to vote simply because of what the Liberal Democrat were promising, and many, many did and simply because of what the Liberal Democrats had to say about tuition fees and things. It is one of the reasons I went in that direction.”
He insisted he was not impugning the personal integrity of Clegg saying: “I do believe he did what he thought was the only choice at that time given the parliamentary situation and it being impossible to do a deal with Labour.”
He added the decision “made it difficult for us who thought progressive politics would be the way forward”.
His remarks come on the day peers decide whether to back the trebling of tuition fees and a junior Liberal Democrat health minister Paul Burstow denied he was being used as a “human shield” by Conservative partners to defend government health policy and spending cuts.
Firth ‘delighted’ with Rafa honour
Colin Firth said he was “delighted” to receive the actor of the year gong at the Richard Attenborough Film Awards.
The British star was awarded the honour by regional film critics for his portrayal of stammering King George VI in The King’s Speech, and Noomi Rapace was given actress of the year for her turn as computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in the big-screen adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy.
He said: “I am delighted to receive the Richard Attenborough Film award for best actor and to be recognised by the regional media in the UK.”
David Fincher’s Facebook movie The Social Network won the prestigious film of the year, while Inception director Christopher Nolan was picked as the filmmaker of the year in the regional awards, dedicated to the acclaimed filmmaker.
13-year-old Chloe Moretz, who was propelled to big-screen fame following her appearances in Kick-Ass and Let Me In, scooped rising star of the year.
“I am so thrilled and humbled to have been thought of, much less win such an award when I am still very young. I hope that in the years to come, I am able to portray characters that will continue to entertain audiences,” she said.
Sir Michael Caine was honoured with the status of All Time Legend, and Angelina Jolie was picked as the film star of 2010.
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part One was voted British film of the year, while Toy Story 3 won best animated film, best 3D film and best family film.

Colin Firth and His ‘King’s Speech’ Win Big at British Independent Film Awards
Hosted by James Nesbitt, Dec. 5 event included awards to Helena Bonham Carter, Gareth Edwards and “Speech” actor Geoffrey Rush and writer David Seidler.
Colin Firth and his turn in The King’s Speech did not fall on deaf ears, striding off with two of the top awards at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.
Firth picked up the evening’s best actor nod for his turn while the film secured the best British independent movie award. He thanked the soon to close U.K. Film Council for “making the whole thing happen.”
And the movie’s royal success at the BIFAs also saw Helena Bonham Carter stroll away with the best supporting actress award. On an evening in which she also picked up the Richard Harris Award for outstanding contribution by an actor to British film, Bonham Carter spent some considerable time at the podium. Picking up her gong for her turn in Speech, Carter noted it showed what bad taste in films she had because she initially turned the role down. She also informed the huge gathering of indie players that her boyfriend — director Tim Burton — wasn’t there because he is currently having some kidney stones removed. “We’ve had two children and I hope by the end of the evening we’ll have two kidney stones to go with them,” the ever eccentric Bonham Carter laughed.
Geoffrey Rush was not to miss out on the right royal party, securing the best supporting actor plaudits while King’s Speech writer David Seidler also talked his way to the event’s best screenplay nod. Unfortunately for the organizers, neither Seidler or Rush could be there. One of the producers joked that Seidler was chained to his laptop writing “the next hit” while Rush is currently on stage in Melbourne in an adaptation of Gogol‘s Diary of a Madman. Director Tom Hooper picked up Rush’s nod on his behalf and promised to deliver it to him in person when he travels to Australia later this week.
